Identity theft occurs when someone uses your personally identifying information, like your name, Access ID, NIC Number, or Credit Card Number, without your permission, to commit fraud or other crimes.

Common method used:

  • Dumpster Diving
    • Looking for bills or other paper with your personal information on it.
  • Skimming
    • Stealing credit/debit card numbers by using a special storage device when processing your card.
  • Phishing
    • Pretending to be financial institutions or companies and send spam or pop-up messages to get you to reveal your personal information.
  • Changing your Address
    • Diverting your billing statements to another location by completing a change of address form.
  • Old-Fashioned Stealing
    • Stealing wallets and purses; mail, including bank and credit card statements.
  • Pretexting
    • Falsely obtain your personal information from financial institutions, telephone companies, and other sources.

  • Skimming
    • Watch for any Skimming device or Alterations made to the ATM device card reader before inserting your Debit/Credit card.
  • Phishing
    • Is where fraudsters send spam or pop-up messages to lure recipients into volunteering personal, financial or credential-related information from unsuspecting victims?

So what you should do?

  • Delete suspicious messages immediately.
  • DON’T click on any links in the message.
  • Never respond to an unsolicited email, or supply personal information as requested by an email, even if the message looks real.
  • Never supply your passwords or other sensitive information via an email message
